Historical background
The Carrilet railway was built in 1926-27 by the local company Ferrocarrils Econòmics to connect Tortosa and La Cava (now known as Deltebre) in the heart of the Ebro Delta. For many years it was the quickest and easiest way to connect the Delta with Tortosa, the main market for local products. As motor vehicles eventually took over this role, the railway began to lose importance and eventually closed down in 1967.
One of the original engines has been restored and is on display in Tortosa Park.
